Scituate Water Plant Work Advances With More Tasks Scheduled

Construction at Scituate’s planned Stearns Meadow Water Treatment Plant advanced through several mechanical, structural and site-work milestones during the week of July 20-24, according to a July 24 update from the Town of Scituate.

The municipal infrastructure project’s weekly update also listed additional work scheduled for July 27-31 and warned residents that construction vehicles may be present in connection with the project.

Work documented during the July 20-24 week

The town reported work on process-filter and backwash piping, mixers, tank coatings, site lighting and exterior siding. Crews also worked on the project’s southwest bioretention ponds, which are part of the site infrastructure.

The activities show the project moving through a combination of building, mechanical and site-development stages. The July 24 update separates the work documented during the July 20-24 week from tasks listed for the following week.

Additional work scheduled through July 31

The town listed additional process-piping and pump work among the tasks scheduled for July 27-31. Contractors also were scheduled to continue tank-coating and lighting work, along with work involving the facility’s elevator, garage canopy and manholes.

Those items were a schedule in the July 24 update, not a confirmation that each task had been completed by July 31. The town’s weekly construction updates page provides the ongoing record for later milestones and changes.

Residents may encounter construction vehicles associated with the plant project, the town warned. The update does not announce a broader road closure or a change to local water service, so the documented resident-facing effect at this stage is the possibility of additional construction traffic near the work site.

Why the project matters

Scituate describes the new plant as a municipal infrastructure project intended to improve drinking-water quality for town residents. The town’s New Water Treatment Plant Project page provides the project purpose and resident information.

Background reported by The Boston Globe said Town Meeting approved the location for the new facility in 2022 and described the project as addressing limitations associated with Scituate’s existing water-treatment system. The July 24 construction update, however, does not say that the new plant is operational or that it is already improving water quality.
