Hoover-Area Gas Eases; Birmingham Diesel Averages $5.161
Hoover-area regular gas averaged $3.747 in AAA’s Birmingham metro check July 31, while diesel averaged $5.161, shaping costs for drivers and businesses.
Regular gasoline edged lower while diesel remained above $5.16 per gallon in the latest Birmingham metro price check used for Hoover-area fuel coverage. AAA’s figures provide a regional benchmark for Hoover drivers, although the organization does not publish a separate standalone Hoover average.
As of July 31, 2026, AAA listed the Birmingham metro average at $3.747 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.161 per gallon for diesel.
Regular gas eased slightly
Regular gasoline was down 0.7 cents from the previous day and 2.7 cents from the prior week. That short-term easing was modest compared with the longer-term increase: the Birmingham metro average was 27.1 cents higher than a month earlier and 96 cents higher than a year earlier.
For Hoover commuters and households, a change of less than a cent may not be noticeable on one fill-up. The year-over-year difference can add up, however, for drivers with long commutes, frequent errands or multiple vehicles. Weekend travelers also face a higher baseline even as the latest daily and weekly trend moves slightly lower.
Diesel remains above $5.16
Diesel moved differently from regular gasoline. The Birmingham metro average rose 0.2 cents from the previous day and was 7.6 cents higher than a week earlier. Diesel was also up 59 cents from a month ago and $1.646 from a year ago.
Higher diesel costs can affect contractors, landscapers, delivery operators, construction companies and other service businesses that rely on commercial vehicles. Restaurants and other businesses that receive frequent deliveries may also face higher operating costs. The price data does not show whether individual companies are absorbing those costs, changing routes or passing part of them through to customers.
How to read the Hoover-area figure
The $3.747 gasoline figure and $5.161 diesel figure are not prices at every Hoover station, and they are not an official citywide Hoover average. They are the Birmingham metro averages published by AAA and used here as the closest regional comparison for Hoover readers. Pump prices can vary by station, brand, location, payment method and timing.
AAA’s Alabama and national averages provide broader context, but those figures should not be substituted for the Birmingham metro numbers. Drivers can compare nearby stations before filling up, particularly when a small per-gallon difference becomes significant across a large tank or commercial fleet.
