St. Petersburg-Area Gas Falls to $3.844; Diesel Stays Above $5.36

Regular gasoline fell to $3.844 per gallon in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater market on AAA’s July 31, 2026, price check, while diesel declined to $5.367. Both prices were lower than the previous day, but their longer-term trends continued to move in different directions.

Regular gas is lower than last week but above July levels

AAA’s metro table shows regular gasoline down 2.9 cents from the prior day and down 13 cents from a week earlier. It was also 2.9 cents below the previous same-site fuel-price check.

The longer comparisons were less favorable for drivers. Regular gas was 3.9 cents higher than a month ago and 81.9 cents higher than a year ago. For St. Petersburg commuters and households, the latest weekly relief has not erased the larger year-over-year increase.

Diesel remains above $5.36

Diesel also eased from the prior day, falling 2.4 cents to $5.367 per gallon. The same 2.4-cent decline was recorded compared with the previous same-site fuel-price check.

Unlike regular gasoline, diesel was higher across the longer comparison windows. It rose 7.4 cents from a week earlier, 85.5 cents from a month ago and $1.725 from a year ago. That keeps fuel costs especially significant for delivery operators, contractors, landscapers, service businesses and other commercial fleets that use diesel more heavily than ordinary passenger vehicles.

What the metro average means locally

The figures cover the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro, the market that includes St. Petersburg. They are averages, not prices at every station in the city, so individual pumps may be higher or lower depending on location, brand and timing.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Florida data provides broader statewide context, but it should not be read as a St. Petersburg-specific or metro-specific price. The local picture is more useful when the two fuels are separated: gasoline has eased from last week, while diesel remains elevated and is higher than it was a week, month and year ago.

That split can affect transportation-heavy household and business costs, including delivery charges, contractor visits, landscaping services, restaurant deliveries and other work that depends on commercial vehicles. It may also matter to residents planning longer weekend drives, although the metro averages do not predict what a particular station will post.
