Round Lake’s Cedar Lake Road project clears land-acquisition step

Lake County’s June 2026 appropriation of $9.6 million for right-of-way acquisition has moved the Cedar Lake Road realignment in downtown Round Lake into a more consequential phase.

The project covers Cedar Lake Road from Nippersink Road to Hart Road. Lake County’s 2026 capital priorities identify it as a Phase II project with construction targeted for 2027, while the project website describes the current work as Phase II design engineering and land acquisition. The latest action is funding for property acquisition, not proof that construction has begun or that every property transaction is complete.

What the project would change

The long-planned realignment is intended to create a more direct roadway through downtown Round Lake and add five new intersections. Plans also include new sidewalks and bike paths, drainage improvements, and better connections for people traveling to and from the Metra station.

A major element is the planned relocation of the existing at-grade Metra crossing and station. The project would also reconfigure the station platform and redesign station parking as part of broader transit-access improvements. The final alignment, station design, parking layout and construction schedule remain subject to continuing design, approvals and acquisition work.

Properties could be affected

Daily Herald reporting says 94 parcels could be affected, including 63 right-of-way parcels, one home and six businesses. Those figures describe reported potential project impacts; they do not establish that every parcel will be acquired or that every business will be displaced.

Right-of-way acquisition is a step toward construction. It does not, by itself, confirm that all offers, settlements, condemnations or relocations have been completed. Property owners and businesses near the planned alignment are likely to need project-specific notices as the county advances the work.

Why the federal deadline matters

The project is supported in part by an $18.8 million federal RAISE grant secured for the Cedar Lake Road Realignment and Mobility Improvements Project. County transportation programming identifies September 30, 2028, as the federal obligation deadline for the Cedar Lake Road construction funding. Daily Herald reporting says the work must be let for bids before that deadline or the funding could be at risk.

That date creates schedule pressure, but it is a funding and obligation milestone—not a date by which the entire project must be finished.

What happens next

Lake County and Round Lake still have design, property acquisition, agency coordination and bid-letting steps ahead. The official 2027 construction target, and the project website’s programmed fall 2027 letting date, should be read as planned milestones rather than a guarantee that work will start on schedule.

Residents, commuters, property owners and downtown businesses should watch Lake County, the Village of Round Lake and the project’s dedicated public information site for acquisition notices, design updates, public meetings and future construction schedules.
