Newport News-Area Gas Prices Ease Again While Diesel Rises to $5.32
Regular gas fell to $3.996 in the Newport News-area metro, while diesel rose to $5.316, creating different cost pressures for drivers and businesses.
Regular gasoline continued to ease in the Newport News area, but diesel moved higher in the latest AAA price check. The Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News metro average was $3.996 per gallon for regular gas and $5.316 for diesel as of July 31, 2026.
Those figures cover the entire metro area, not Newport News alone. They show the regional trend, while individual stations may post prices above or below the average.
Regular gas falls from the previous day and week
The metro regular-gas average fell from $4.008 the previous day and $4.057 a week earlier. That is a decrease of 1.2 cents from the prior-day average and 6.1 cents from the week-ago figure.
The longer-term comparison remains less favorable for drivers. Regular gas is 30.4 cents above the $3.692 average recorded a month earlier and 89.4 cents above the $3.102 average from a year ago.
Virginiaโs statewide regular-gas average was $3.941 on the same AAA update, putting the Newport News-area metro average about 5.5 cents higher than the state figure.
Diesel moves in the opposite direction
Diesel reached $5.316 per gallon in the metro area, up from $5.311 the previous day and $5.291 a week earlier. The latest price is 44.5 cents above the month-ago average of $4.871 and $1.667 above the year-ago figure of $3.649.
That split matters for contractors, delivery operators, landscapers, service companies, fleets and other businesses that depend on diesel. Even a small daily change can add up when a business fills several tanks or travels long distances.
One Newport News station shows local variation
7-Eleven lists regular gasoline at $3.999 at its station at 12801 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News. That is 0.3 cents above the AAA metro average, but it is only one stationโs listed price and should not be treated as a citywide average. The station says its fuel prices are updated within 24 hours.
For commuters and households, the recent gasoline decline may provide modest relief for drivers who compare prices before filling up. Diesel users face the opposite trend, while fuel costs can also affect contractors, delivery services, restaurants and other businesses with fuel-intensive operations.
The U.S. Energy Information Administrationโs latest East Coast data showed regular gasoline at $3.997 per gallon for the week of July 27, broadly consistent with the AAA metro reading. That regional figure provides context but is not a Newport News-specific average.
Drivers should check nearby station prices before filling up, particularly when buying diesel or fueling a larger vehicle. What are the highest and lowest pump prices you are seeing in Newport News? Share them locally so other drivers can compare.
