Newport News voters head to polls Tuesday for primary and mayoral special election

Newport News residents head to the polls Tuesday, August 4, for Virginia’s rescheduled primary election and a special election for one Newport News mayoral seat. Polling places across the city are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The mayoral race remains unresolved until election officials report and, where required, certify the results. No outcome should be treated as final before that process is complete.

What Newport News voters need to know

Election Day voters must go to their assigned polling place. The Newport News Voter Registrar lists Election Day hours as 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Early in-person voting ended Saturday, August 1, at 5 p.m. There is no additional early-voting period on Tuesday.

Check your precinct and sample ballot

Newport News voters do not all receive the same ballot. The city provides sample ballots organized by precinct, including Denbigh, Stoney Run, McIntosh, Downtown, Hilton, Warwick and other city precincts.

Residents should verify their registration information, precinct and polling place before traveling. Reviewing the correct sample ballot can help voters see whether the mayoral special election and other contests or questions appear on their ballot.

Same-day registration requires a provisional ballot

Virginia’s regular voter-registration deadline for this election was July 24. Under state rules, voters who missed that deadline may register and vote in person through same-day registration, but they must cast a provisional ballot.

On Election Day, same-day registration must be completed at the designated polling place for the voter’s residence and remains subject to state eligibility and verification requirements.

Voters who need to use the provisional-ballot process should allow extra time and bring the information required to complete registration and identity or eligibility verification.

Residents can use the city’s official polling-place lookup and precinct-specific sample ballots before leaving home. Results in the mayoral special election should be considered unofficial until election authorities release and certify them.
