Diesel is rising faster

Diesel’s daily increase was larger than regular gas’s movement, and its longer-term gains were larger as well. The August 1 average was 6.0 cents above the week-earlier level, 32.1 cents above the month-earlier level and $1.557 above the year-earlier level.

That trend matters beyond drivers of diesel-powered vehicles. Higher diesel costs can add pressure over time for delivery fleets, construction, landscaping, maintenance, waste hauling and other services that rely on commercial vehicles or equipment. Restaurants and retailers may also face indirect transportation-cost pressure, although the price data alone does not show how any particular Oakland business is responding.

Why California prices remain elevated
