Indianapolis Gas Eases 1 Cent While Diesel Rises 1 Cent on Aug. 1

Regular gas eases daily but remains higher across comparison periods

AAA listed Indianapolis regular gasoline at $3.633 per gallon on Aug. 1, down from $3.643 the previous day. The latest average was still 12.1 cents higher than a week earlier, 54 cents higher than a month earlier and 32.5 cents above the year-ago average of $3.308.

Compared with the July 31 check, the Indianapolis regular-gas average is 4 cents higher. The small daily decline on Aug. 1 therefore has not erased the larger increase since the last update.

Diesel continues to carry the larger increase

Diesel reached an Indianapolis metro average of $5.390 per gallon, up from $5.380 the previous day. It was also higher across every comparison window listed by AAA: 20.1 cents above the week-ago average, 27 cents above the month-ago average and $1.521 above the year-ago average of $3.869.

Diesel’s year-over-year increase is substantially larger than regular gas’s. The $1.521 increase for diesel compares with a 32.5-cent increase for regular gasoline, a difference that matters more for vehicles and operations that buy fuel in large volumes.

Compared with the July 31 check, diesel is 2.9 cents higher. The latest figures show a continuing split: regular gas is slightly cheaper than the day before, while diesel is still moving higher.

What the difference may mean locally

A one-cent daily change may have a limited effect on a single household fill-up, but the cost can compound for high-mileage drivers and businesses purchasing hundreds or thousands of gallons. Commuters using diesel vehicles, contractors, delivery operators, landscapers, repair companies and other service businesses may have more fuel costs to watch because diesel remains far above its year-earlier level.

Those expenses can affect operating budgets, delivery pricing, service-call costs and household transportation spending. The price data does not document how Indianapolis residents or businesses are responding, so the practical effects will vary by mileage, vehicle type, fuel volume and whether a company can pass costs along to customers.
