Additional charges filed in Grand Island assault case after victim’s death

Two Grand Island men face additional felony charges after a July 5 downtown assault led to the death of 41-year-old Matthew Bishop of Grand Island four days later.

The Hall County Attorney’s Office filed the additional charges July 20 against Jesus A. Reyes and Angel G. Vega. Both men were previously charged with first-degree assault.

What charges were added

Reyes, 23, faces first-degree assault and manslaughter, according to the City of Grand Island.

Vega, also 23, faces first-degree assault and manslaughter, along with an accessory-to-a-felony charge.

The charges are allegations, not convictions. Reyes and Vega are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Video review and intent

The additional charges followed a review of enhanced video from the July 5 incident. The City of Grand Island said the Mid-States Organized Crime Information Center completed the enhancement, providing investigators and prosecutors with a clearer view of the events.

After reviewing the evidence, prosecutors determined that there was no evidence establishing that the defendants intended to kill Bishop. That statement does not resolve the case or determine whether either defendant is guilty. The investigation remains ongoing.

What investigators allege

Publicly reported probable-cause statements describe a confrontation near 115 W. Third St. shortly after 11 p.m. July 5. Officers found Bishop in the street with severe facial trauma, and he was taken to CHI Health–St. Francis.

According to the arrest statements reported by KGFW, Reyes and Vega had been walking from downtown bars with a third man before an argument with Bishop became physical. The statements allege that punches were thrown and that Bishop fell to the concrete, where he remained until first responders arrived.

Custody and next court step

The Hall County Department of Corrections’ current inmate list showed Reyes and Vega listed in custody on Aug. 1, 2026. An inmate-list entry is only a custody snapshot; it does not establish guilt, current bond conditions or the outcome of the case.

KGFW reported on July 9 that preliminary hearings for both men were scheduled for 3 p.m. Aug. 4. The current hearing date should be confirmed through the Hall County Court clerk before anyone relies on it as the latest docket status.
