Judge denies bond for man accused in Charlotte officer shooting

A judge denied bond Sept. 10, 2026, for Dionte McCracking, the man accused of shooting a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer after a suspicious-vehicle call on Enderly Road.

The bond ruling was the latest major development in the case, which began shortly after midnight Sept. 9 in west Charlotte. McCracking remains accused in a pending criminal case, and the denial of bond is not a conviction or a finding that the allegations are true.

What happened on Enderly Road

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said officers responded at approximately 12:23 a.m. Sept. 9 to a suspicious-vehicle call in the 1200 block of Enderly Road in CMPD’s Metro Division.

CMPD and local reports said an officer was shot and suffered a shoulder injury. The officer was taken to a hospital and was expected to recover, according to police and subsequent local reporting.

Police later located McCracking at a south Charlotte residence or apartment complex. He was arrested after an hourslong standoff involving SWAT officers and negotiators, according to WBTV and WSOC-TV.

Charges and the bond decision

WBTV reported that McCracking, 28, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

McCracking appeared in court Sept. 10 and was denied bond. WBTV reported that he was appointed a public defender and that court records indicated electronic monitoring would be required if he were eventually released.

What prosecutors and an affidavit allege

A WBTV report citing an affidavit said McCracking allegedly ran from the officer, who pursued him, and that the two became involved in a physical struggle over a gun.

The affidavit-based report said McCracking allegedly tried to shoot the officer in the head before the officer was shot in the shoulder. WSOC-TV separately reported that prosecutors described a struggle over a gun and said one bullet struck the officer in the shoulder.

Those accounts describe allegations and information presented in connection with the criminal case. They have not been established by a conviction or final court finding.

Evidence described in court-related accounts

WSOC-TV reported that prosecutors said investigators found three spent shell casings at the scene. The station also reported that investigators recovered a 9mm handgun at a south Charlotte location and that a person connected to the home told investigators it was the gun used in the shooting.

The shell casings and firearm details were reported as part of the investigative and prosecutorial account presented during the early court proceedings. They do not by themselves resolve McCracking’s guilt or innocence.

What happens next

McCracking remains in a pending criminal case after the Sept. 10 bond decision. The selected reports did not establish a later case outcome or confirmed next hearing date.
