Henryville Welcome Center reconstruction remains in Indiana’s long-range highway plan

Indiana transportation records continue to carry a reconstruction project for Henryville’s northbound I-65 Welcome Center, but they do not provide one clear construction date for the Clark County facility.

The latest Indiana Department of Transportation project listing, created July 24, 2026, identifies the project as the I-65 Henryville Welcome Center Renovation & Truck Parking Facility. It lists project numbers 1902858 and 2301561 and records a construction phase in fiscal year 2026 programming.

That entry shows the project remains in the state transportation program. It does not, by itself, prove that construction has started, that a contract has been awarded, that all funds have been obligated or that a closure is scheduled. The relevant construction funding fields in the July 24 listing display $0.

Planned changes at mile marker 22

The project concerns the northbound welcome center at I-65 mile marker 22 in Henryville, Clark County. Regional transportation records describe a reconstruction intended to meet the needs of travelers using the interstate.

Under the planned design, the welcome-center building would be redesigned to accommodate a higher volume of travelers. The parking lot would also be reconfigured to add at least 36 truck-parking spaces. Those additional spaces are planned improvements; they are not currently available.

KIPDA transportation records identify INDOT as the sponsor and show successive estimated project costs of $57,530,607 and $58,552,558. The successive entries include preliminary engineering, right-of-way and construction phases. They are planning-record estimates and programmed entries, not a final bid price or proof that all project funds have been obligated.

Why the construction dates do not line up

The July 24 INDOT listing places a construction phase in FY 2026 programming. A separate INDOT Rest Area and Welcome Center Improvement Plan issued in November 2025 says construction at the northbound Henryville Welcome Center is to begin in FY 2028.

Those records create a timing discrepancy. FY 2026 is not a confirmed construction start date, and FY 2028 should not be treated as a final commitment without a later INDOT confirmation. The documents reviewed do not establish that work is underway or that the agency has issued a final letting schedule.

For residents, travelers and businesses that depend on I-65 traffic, the practical takeaway is that the project remains planned but the public records do not yet provide a single reliable construction date.

The northbound facility remains open

The current INDOT facility page lists the northbound Henryville rest area as open. It identifies 62 car spaces and 64 truck spaces, along with restrooms and vending machines.

Those figures describe the existing northbound facility and should not be confused with the planned addition of at least 36 truck spaces. The northbound site is also separate from the southbound Henryville Rest Area.

What remains unresolved

As of Aug. 1, 2026, the records reviewed do not document an immediate closure, an active construction site, a contract award or a completion date. They show that the reconstruction remains in state and regional transportation planning records, while INDOT’s published documents do not align cleanly on when construction would begin.

Bottom line: Henryville’s northbound welcome-center reconstruction remains programmed and planned, with a redesigned building and at least 36 additional truck spaces proposed. The existing facility remains open, but current records do not establish when construction will actually start.
