Waltham plans August review of ADA ramps and sidewalk work
Waltham is seeking bids for a proposed citywide contract covering ADA ramps and concrete sidewalk work, giving residents a closer look at potential accessibility improvements before any project is awarded.
The city’s bid posting lists the solicitation as open until contracted. Bids are due by 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, at the City of Waltham Purchasing Department, 610 Main St., where the bid documents say bids will be publicly opened and read. The city’s posting also identifies a virtual Zoom opening.
The solicitation was published July 20 and remains in the competitive-bidding stage. It is not an awarded contract or a confirmed construction schedule.
What the base bid includes
The specifications estimate a base scope with 135 square yards of concrete wheelchair ramps, 10 detectable-tile surfaces for handicap ramps, 10 square yards of concrete sidewalk and 55 square yards of hot-mix-asphalt walk surface.
The base bid also lists estimated quantities for excavation, curb removal and resetting, drainage-related materials, loam and seeding, and uniformed police details. The bid form identifies the quantities as indeterminate and not guaranteed. Payment would be based on the actual quantities constructed.
An alternate could add more sidewalk work
Alternate No. 1 estimates an additional 260 square yards of concrete sidewalk, 25 square yards of concrete driveway, 35 square yards of wheelchair ramp and two detectable-tile surfaces. It also includes hot-mix-asphalt driveway work, loam and seeding, drainage-related materials and police details.
The alternate is expressly listed as work to be performed if awarded by the city. Its quantities are also estimates rather than guaranteed totals, with payment based on actual construction.
The city reserves the right to reject any or all bids, waive informalities and omit items. The bid documents also say a contract award may depend on an appropriation by the Waltham City Council, authorization by the mayor and other required approvals.
Locations and final cost are not yet public
The reviewed procurement records identify the location of work as the City of Waltham, Massachusetts, but do not identify specific streets, neighborhoods or work sites. They also do not provide a final contract value. Bid prices are expected to become available when bids are opened Aug. 12.
Residents therefore may learn more about proposed costs and contractor options on Aug. 12, while precise work locations and the final scope may require later city action or additional notices.
Construction would come later, if awarded
If the contract is awarded, funded and approved, the selected contractor would be required to substantially complete the work within 60 calendar days after the city issues a notice to proceed. The schedule excludes weather-related shutdowns, including the winter moratorium period identified in the contract documents.
That requirement does not mean construction will begin immediately after the bid opening. The city must still evaluate the bids, take award action, secure required approvals and issue a notice to proceed.
Separate grant provides limited funding context
Waltham City Council minutes from May 26 record a mayoral request for acceptance of a $289,982 MassDOT Complete Streets construction grant. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee.
The reviewed council minutes and procurement documents do not establish that the grant will fund this specific ADA-ramp and sidewalk solicitation.
Residents should watch for the Aug. 12 bid results, any contract-award action, appropriation and approval decisions, publication of work locations, and later construction notices. Until those steps occur, the listed ramp, sidewalk and alternate quantities remain proposed estimates rather than guaranteed work.
