Newtonville Station Rebuild Remains in Design and Procurement

The MBTA’s Newtonville Commuter Rail Station Accessibility Improvements project remains in design and procurement, with work targeted to be underway by the end of calendar year 2026, according to a May 8 regional transportation update.

The project is planned to provide two fully accessible side platforms and modernize Newtonville Station on the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail Line. A 2024 state and city announcement estimated the rebuild at $50 million and described elevators, high-level platforms, track and signal upgrades, lighting, signage, bicycle racks, and improved pickup and drop-off areas. A Boston-area transportation program describes 400-foot, high-level double-sided platforms.

A Massachusetts transportation document said in September 2025 that design was underway and the MBTA was preparing alternative-delivery procurement. The latest update places the project in the Construction Manager-at-Risk process. Continued funding for MBTA station accessibility and resilience improvements is identified in the fiscal 2026 capital budget. The MBTA has not announced final station-closure dates or a finalized plan for replacement service and other rider mitigation. The next known step is continued procurement, with construction targeted to be underway by the end of 2026.
