Colorado Springs security plan for South Nevada remains pending after July 28 meeting
A proposed $458,000 appropriation for private security services along Colorado Springs’ South Nevada Avenue corridor remains pending after the City Council’s July 28 meeting.

According to the ordinance and its summary, the city would contract with the Colorado Springs Urban Renewal Authority. The URA would then contract with Fidelis Security Solutions to provide security staffing and patrol services in the South Nevada Avenue corridor and related South Nevada Urban Renewal Area.
City documents describe public-safety and quality-of-life concerns in the corridor as the reason for pursuing enhanced security. Those statements are the city’s stated rationale; the accessible legislation does not establish an independent finding about crime reduction or the operation’s eventual results.
What is known — and what is not
The legislation identifies the funding source, contract chain and total proposed cost. It does not establish that the security operation has begun, and the accessible records reviewed do not confirm a final staffing level, patrol schedule, start date or contract term.
Those details will matter to South Nevada businesses, workers, residents and visitors. A final agreement should clarify the patrol coverage, operating schedule, reporting responsibilities and measures the city and URA will use to assess performance.
The proposal is for an added private security presence. The available records do not describe the guards as a replacement for the Colorado Springs Police Department or establish that they would have police powers.
How it fits the city’s broader strategy
The South Nevada proposal fits within Keep It Clean & Safe COS, a city initiative that combines safety and security, cleanliness and outreach in priority areas, including the South Nevada Urban Renewal Area.
It is separate from the downtown Clean & Safe program. The city describes that February 2026 downtown agreement as a $700,000 contract involving supplemental security teams, ambassadors and coordinated support services. The South Nevada ordinance specifically addresses security services and does not establish that the proposed contract would include downtown-style ambassadors, homelessness outreach, mental-health services or cleanup work.

The next scheduled step is the City Council’s August 11 second-reading agenda. If council adopts the ordinance, it would still require the final adoption and publication steps specified in the draft ordinance, followed by contract and operational details.
Until those actions are documented, the $458,000 remains a proposed additional allocation. The planned operation would total $758,000, using the existing $300,000 allocation plus the proposed Retail Marijuana Tax Fund contribution.
