Hopi School System transition brings Keams Canyon board seat to November ballot

Keams Canyon Elementary is one of seven schools included in a planned unified Hopi School System, and the transition now has a direct local consequence: a Keams Canyon attendance-area seat is scheduled for election this fall.

Keams Canyon seat is scheduled for November vote

The Hopi Board of Education candidate packet released July 15 identifies Keams Canyon Elementary as one of four attendance-area vacancies in the November election. The other vacancies are tied to Moencopi Day School, Second Mesa Day School and Hopi Junior Senior High School.

Completed candidate materials must be submitted to the Hopi Elections Office by 5 p.m. on August 27, 2026. The election is scheduled for November 12, 2026.

Attendance-area candidates must be at least 25 years old and pass a background check. Hopi membership is preferred but not required. The packet also bars or restricts candidacy for certain Tribal Council members, local school-board members, school-system employees and direct relatives of employees at the school represented. Candidates do not have to live in the attendance area or on the Hopi Reservation.
