Athens Gas Prices Ease Again, but Diesel Stays Above $5
Regular gasoline and diesel prices both edged lower in the latest AAA Athens metro price check dated August 2, 2026, but the relief remains limited. Regular gas averaged $3.803 per gallon, while diesel averaged $5.224.
AAA’s Athens figures are metro averages, not guaranteed prices at every station in Athens or the surrounding area. Individual pumps can be higher or lower depending on location, competition and when the station last updated its price.
Regular gas is lower than yesterday and last week
The Athens metro regular-gas average fell 1.1 cents from the previous day’s $3.814 price and is down 12 cents from a week earlier, when AAA listed the average at $3.923.
The longer comparisons remain less favorable for drivers. Regular gas is up 26 cents from a month ago and 89.4 cents from the same period last year. The recent daily and weekly declines therefore have not erased the larger increase households have absorbed since June or August 2025.
Diesel remains above $5 per gallon
Diesel averaged $5.224 per gallon in the latest Athens reading, down 1.1 cents from the previous day and 3.5 cents from a week earlier. Diesel is still 56.9 cents higher than a month ago and $1.679 higher than a year ago.
That split matters for more than motorists. Higher diesel costs can affect delivery routes, contractor travel, farm operations, landscaping, construction, restaurant supply runs and service businesses that rely on work vehicles. For households, fuel remains a cost to watch when planning commutes, errands and weekend travel.
Station prices can vary
The U.S. Energy Information Administration maintains broader gasoline and diesel market reporting, but national and state figures do not replace the Athens-specific AAA metro average. Drivers should compare nearby stations before filling up, especially when buying larger amounts of fuel or diesel.
