Kennedy Avenue Bridge Closure Begins Aug. 10 in Danbury

Danbury plans to close Kennedy Avenue to all traffic beginning approximately August 10, 2026, as the Kennedy Avenue Bridge rehabilitation enters Phase 2. The city estimates that the full-closure phase will last about two months.

The closure will affect motorists, pedestrians, nearby businesses, employees and HARTransit riders near Main Street, Kennedy Park and the Still River.

What will close

The project is located approximately 150 feet west of Main Street, where Kennedy Avenue crosses the Still River near Kennedy Park and the HARTransit Pulse Point. During Phase 2, Kennedy Avenue will be fully closed to all traffic.

Motorists should expect Kennedy Avenue to be unavailable in the project area and should follow posted construction and detour signs. The city’s notices do not identify a specific detour route.

Pedestrians should also expect construction-zone restrictions, including changes around sidewalks and curbs near the bridge and Kennedy Park.

Bridge and roadway work

Phase 2 includes removing roadway pavement, curbing and sidewalks along approximately 300 feet of Kennedy Avenue.

Crews are expected to complete final bridge-deck repairs and structural rehabilitation, install waterproofing, build new granite curbing, repave the roadway and install new sidewalks and signage.

The city describes both the start date and duration as estimates. The approximately two-month timeline is not a guaranteed reopening date.

HARTransit coordination

The city says it is coordinating with HARTransit during the project. The engineering notice says HARTransit must complete relocation to a temporary Pulse Point before Phase 2 begins, and the city’s project page refers to final transit coordination and related improvements.

Because the materials describe temporary-point and relocation work, riders should check HARTransit or city updates for operational changes before traveling through the area. The documents do not confirm that the existing Pulse Point will remain in its current location during the full-closure phase.

Project background

The Kennedy Avenue work is part of a broader bridge rehabilitation project. The News-Times reported that the project has a total cost of approximately $4.6 million and is funded through state and federal grants.

The rehabilitation is intended to improve the bridge deck, roadway, sidewalks and curbs. During the full-closure phase, people who drive, walk, work or operate businesses near the corridor should plan for changing access conditions and follow posted signs.
