Lakeland Gas Prices Ease as Diesel Holds Above $5.30
Regular gasoline and diesel prices both eased in the Lakeland-Winter Haven market in AAA’s latest check, but diesel remains above $5.30 per gallon and both fuels are substantially more expensive than a year ago.
AAA listed the metro average for regular gasoline at $3.802 per gallon on Monday, August 3. That was down 1.7 cents from the previous day and 15.9 cents from a week earlier.
Regular gas falls from last week
The latest regular-gas average was also below AAA’s July 29 Lakeland-Winter Haven check, when the metro average was $3.907 per gallon. The current figure is a metro average, so prices at individual stations across Lakeland and Winter Haven may be higher or lower.
Despite the recent easing, regular gasoline remained 82 cents more expensive than the year-ago average of $2.982, according to AAA’s comparison data.
Diesel remains above $5.30
Diesel averaged $5.334 per gallon in the latest metro snapshot. That was down 0.7 cents from the previous day and 12.7 cents from a week earlier.
Diesel was also below the $5.427 average reported in AAA’s July 29 check. Even after that decline, the latest diesel average was $1.727 higher than the year-ago figure of $3.607.
The diesel level matters beyond drivers of pickup trucks and passenger vehicles. Higher diesel costs can affect contractors, delivery operators, farmers, restaurants, service businesses and other companies that rely on commercial vehicles or equipment. For households and commuters, the recent declines may offer some relief, but the year-over-year gap remains a cost to watch when planning regular driving or weekend travel.
Why prices remain elevated
In a July 30 national update, AAA said crude oil prices remained in the $80-per-barrel range amid continued market instability. AAA also noted that August often brings some seasonal relief as summer road trips wind down, although elevated crude prices could delay that pattern.
Local motorists should compare nearby stations before filling up because the Lakeland-Winter Haven figures are averages rather than a guarantee of what any one pump will charge.
