Lakeland Daily Brief: School Zone Cameras, Major Crash Cleanup, Traffic Updates
Lakeland, FL — February 6, 2026 — School zone speed cameras move closer to enforcement as police respond to a major crash and traffic crews flag safety reminders.
School Zone Speed Cameras Near Full Enforcement
The City of Lakeland continues rolling out its new school zone speed camera program, with most cameras now active in a warning phase. Drivers caught going more than 10 miles per hour over the posted limit while school-zone lights are flashing are currently receiving mailed warnings.
City officials say the program is aimed squarely at improving safety near schools, not generating revenue. Once the warning phase ends, $100 citations will be issued for qualifying violations. Residents are urged to slow down and stay alert during school hours, especially near elementary and middle schools.
High-Speed Chase Ends in North Lakeland Crash
A high-speed pursuit that began in Pasco County ended in Lakeland on Wednesday afternoon with a multi-vehicle rollover crash at US 98 North and Duff Road. The intersection was shut down for several hours as deputies investigated the scene.
Authorities confirmed the suspect, who was wanted in connection with an attempted homicide, was taken into custody at the crash site. Drivers in north Lakeland experienced significant delays, and officials advised motorists to avoid the area until roads were fully reopened.
Traffic Operations Highlight Safety Reminders
Lakeland traffic officials are also reminding drivers about basic roadway safety rules, including avoiding blocked intersections and staying clear of railroad tracks, even when signals appear favorable.
The city continues to monitor traffic flow from its management center, using cameras and signal timing to reduce congestion and improve safety. With recent incidents underscoring the risks of speeding and aggressive driving, officials say everyday caution can make a real difference.
Looking Ahead
More updates are expected soon regarding the official start date for school zone citations. City leaders say additional public notice will be provided before fines begin.
