Dearborn Heights voters head to polls Tuesday as primary deadlines arrive
Dearborn Heights voters will go to the polls Tuesday, Aug. 4, for the 2026 primary election. Precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and voters who are in line by 8 p.m. must be allowed to receive a ballot.
The City Clerk’s Office at 6045 Fenton will also handle election business from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. That includes in-person registration and address updates for eligible residents who bring proof of residency.
Election Day basics
Before leaving home, voters should confirm their registration, precinct, polling place and sample ballot through Michigan’s Voter Information Center. Dearborn Heights lists precinct locations on its elections page, but an individual polling assignment depends on the voter’s precinct.
Michigan accepts several forms of photo identification at the polls, including a Michigan driver’s license or state ID, an out-of-state driver’s license or ID, a federal or state government-issued photo ID, a U.S. passport, a military ID, a qualifying student ID or a tribal identification card. A voter who does not have or bring photo identification may still vote by signing an affidavit.
Registration and address changes
Residents who need to register or update an address within 14 days of the election must appear in person at the City Clerk’s Office, 6045 Fenton, with proof of residency. The city lists examples such as a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check or other government document showing the voter’s name and current address. Electronic versions may be accepted.
The city’s election information also notes that the 30-day residency requirement still applies. Residents with questions can contact the Clerk’s Office at 313-791-3430 or mailto:clerks@dearbornheightsmi.gov.
Absentee-ballot deadline
Absentee ballots must be received by 8 p.m. Tuesday to be counted. Mailing a ballot or placing it in a drop box is not enough unless the clerk receives it by that deadline.
Return envelopes must be signed in ink, and the signature must match the signature on file with the voter’s registration. Voters who already submitted an absentee ballot can use Michigan’s voter-information system to check whether it has been received.
Dearborn Heights voters returning ballots to a drop box must use one within the city. The four locations listed by the city are:
- City Hall, 6045 Fenton, to the right of the main entrance
- John F. Kennedy Jr. Library, 24602 Van Born
- Justice Center, 25637 Michigan
- Richard A. Young Center, 5400 McKinley
Early voting has ended
Early voting for the primary ran from July 25 through Aug. 2 at the Canfield Community Center, 1801 N. Beech Daly. No early voting is offered Monday, Aug. 3.
The city will canvass the early votes at 8 p.m. Tuesday. That canvass is separate from regular Election Day voting at voters’ assigned precincts.
Check details before leaving home
Michigan’s voter-information system allows residents to verify registration, precinct and polling place, view a sample ballot and track an absentee ballot. The Dearborn Heights Clerk’s Office also can help confirm a polling location by phone.
Residents should verify their individual details through official city or state election resources before heading to a polling place, particularly if they have moved, recently registered or returned an absentee ballot.
