Verizon plans to sell 274 stores ahead of Aug. 16 transition
Verizon plans to sell 274 company-owned retail stores and eliminate about 500 corporate jobs, with the ownership changes scheduled to take effect on August 16, 2026.
The locations are not being announced as closures. They are expected to continue operating as authorized Verizon retailers under new ownership. For customers, that means a familiar storefront may remain open even as its operator, staffing structure and day-to-day practices change.
What Verizon announced
Verizon announced the changes on July 16 as part of a broader restructuring. About 3,000 retail and corporate employees are affected, according to reporting by Reuters and Fierce Network. The reported breakdown includes approximately 2,500 retail workers connected to the transferred stores and about 500 corporate employees whose positions are being eliminated.
After the planned transition, Verizon is expected to retain about 1,000 company-owned stores. Fierce Network reported that the 274 locations are being sold to about six entities that are expected to operate them as authorized Verizon retailers. The specific buyers and store-level changes have not been publicly identified in the sources reviewed for this article.
What changes for workers
The retail employees connected to the transferred stores are not automatically confirmed to be losing their jobs. Their employer may change if a new authorized retailer takes over, and the new owners may retain or rehire some workers. The available reporting does not establish the outcome for every affected employee.
That is separate from the approximately 500 corporate job cuts, which Verizon has described as part of its broader restructuring. The sources reviewed do not provide a store-by-store account of retention decisions, severance terms or changes to employee benefits.
What changes for customers
A transferred store may continue selling Verizon products and serving Verizon customers at the same location after August 16. But ownership and payroll can change even when the physical storefront stays open.
Customers should watch for updates to store hours, staffing, inventory and the types of account help available. Corporate-owned and authorized-retailer locations may differ in how they handle complex account issues, upgrades, trade-ins, returns and other service questions. Verizon has not confirmed that prices, plans, warranties or return policies will change as a result of the transfers.
Before visiting an affected store during the transition, customers should check Verizonโs store information and confirm that the location offers the service they need. A store that remains open may still have different staffing or operating procedures under its new owner.
What to watch before August 16
The most important details will come at the store level: ownership notices, operating hours, staffing plans, inventory and instructions for customers with pending purchases, trade-ins or account problems.
Verizon could also issue additional guidance explaining how customer support will work at transferred locations. Until those details are available, the confirmed change is ownership and payrollโnot a confirmed closure of the 274 stores.
For customers, the practical question is whether the new authorized retailers provide the same access and service at each location. For workers, the key issue is whether a change in store ownership also means a change in employer, schedule, benefits or job status.
