I-79 Wexford Interchange construction keeps changing access to Exit 73

The July 27-30 overnight lane restrictions at the I-79/Route 910 interchange are over, but construction-related traffic changes remain for drivers using Wexford’s Exit 73, Route 910 and Wexford Bayne Road.

PennDOT’s July 24 notice scheduled single-lane restrictions from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on July 27 and 28 for northbound I-79 between the Route 910 interchange ramps. On July 29 and 30, I-79 was reduced to one lane in both directions through the interchange for overhead beam work. Those dates were past as of August 4, 2026, and the work was weather permitting.

A $46.5 million project in active construction

The restrictions are part of PennDOT’s $46.5 million I-79/Route 910 Wexford Interchange project. Wexford is the local name associated with the interchange and Exit 73, while PennDOT’s official project record places the work in Franklin Park Borough and Marshall Township in Allegheny County.

The project entered construction in August 2025. PennDOT’s project page was last updated July 29, 2026, and lists a proposed construction end in October 2027. The work is anticipated to continue through the 2027 construction season.

More 2026 restrictions remain possible

PennDOT’s May 26 traffic-phasing and incident-management presentation describes additional restrictions planned for the remainder of the 2026 construction season. The plan calls for six overnight I-79 southbound highway closures using an off-ramp and on-ramp detour, three nights of northbound intermittent stoppages and ramp closures with a detour through the Warrendale Interchange, and three northbound overnight highway closures using a ramp detour.

The plan also identifies work on the southbound I-79 on-ramp, southbound ramp restrictions during tie-ins and construction of a temporary northbound on-ramp. Route 910 and Wexford Bayne Road have changing lane configurations and turn movements near the interchange as the work advances.

Those items describe the broader project plan, not a fixed calendar for every remaining restriction. PennDOT may issue separate notices as individual activities are scheduled, and weather or construction conditions can change the timing.

Local access changes can last beyond overnight work

Franklin Park Borough reported that a new Route 910/Wexford Bayne Road traffic configuration was expected to remain in place through early August. The notice said one of two westbound turning lanes to the southbound I-79 on-ramp was closed, while a second eastbound through lane between Nicholson Road and the southbound on-ramp had reopened. The right-turn lane to southbound I-79 remained open.

The borough also said the southbound I-79 off-ramp to Route 910 would remain separated around the clock through mid-August and that the southbound on-ramp from Route 910 would remain shifted to new pavement during that period. The notice said all turn movements would still be accommodated.

PennDOT says temporary ramps are intended to maintain access for most of the construction period, although short-term lane and shoulder closures will continue. For drivers approaching Exit 73, access may change as temporary ramps open, ramp tie-ins are completed or traffic is shifted.

What this means for Wexford-area drivers

WPXI previously reported a northbound Exit 73 ramp closure that directed drivers to continue to the Warrendale Interchange, use Warrendale Bayne Road and return southbound to Route 910. The report said significant congestion was expected during the traffic stoppages and ramp closure.

For commuters, workers and businesses that depend on I-79 or Route 910 access, the practical effects may include slower overnight travel, changing access to Exit 73 and more complicated local movements near Wexford Bayne Road. The effect will vary by route and work period rather than applying equally across the entire Wexford community.

Drivers should check the latest PennDOT notices or 511PA information before traveling. The July 27-30 schedule has ended, but additional lane shifts, ramp work, intermittent stoppages and overnight restrictions remain possible while the interchange project continues toward its proposed October 2027 completion.
