Grady plans South Fulton medical campus as region faces hospital-access constraints

Grady Health System has announced plans for a new medical center campus in South Fulton County, an expansion the Atlanta safety-net system says is intended to improve access to care, ease capacity constraints and strengthen community health.

The announcement, made July 7, comes as the Atlanta region continues to contend with reduced hospital capacity following Wellstar’s 2022 closures of Atlanta Medical Center and Atlanta Medical Center South. Grady Memorial Hospital remains Atlanta’s public safety-net hospital.

Emergency department expected in late 2026

A separate Grady project in South Fulton includes a freestanding emergency department with 20 beds. That facility is expected to open in late 2026, though Grady has not provided an exact opening date in the material released with the broader campus announcement.

The planned emergency facility is intended to serve people in south Fulton County, where access to emergency care can require longer travel. Grady reported that about 30% of patients at Grady Memorial Hospital come from southern Fulton County, according to reporting by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The newly announced campus is a plan, not an open facility. Its final construction budget, full service mix and staffing plan have not been announced, and those details remain subject to future announcements and approvals.

Part of a broader access strategy

Grady said the South Fulton project builds on a broader effort to extend care beyond its main Atlanta hospital. The system has expanded neighborhood clinics and mobile health units, as well as hospital-at-home, home health, remote monitoring and telehealth services.

The system described the new campus as an effort to add access and relieve pressure on its existing facilities. It has not said that the project will replace all hospital capacity lost through the 2022 closures.

Leadership change planned

The campus announcement also included a planned leadership transition. Grady CEO John Haupert said he plans to retire at the end of 2026 after 15 years leading the system.

For patients and families, the immediate change is limited: the new campus and emergency department are not yet available for care. The next known milestone is the expected late-2026 opening of the 20-bed freestanding emergency department; further details on the larger campus are expected in later announcements.

Grady’s July announcement provided the system’s account of the campus plans and leadership transition. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution separately reported on the South Fulton emergency department and the share of Grady Memorial patients who come from southern Fulton County.
