Indianapolis council committee advances proposed data-center moratorium to Aug. 10 vote

An Indianapolis City-County Council committee has advanced a proposal to pause new data-center approvals through 2027, sending the measure to the full council for scheduled consideration on Aug. 10.

The committee acted July 29 after months of community pressure over data-center proposals in Indianapolis. The proposal has not yet become policy: as of Aug. 3, the full council had not voted on it.

The City-County Council calendar lists its Aug. 10, 2026, meeting for 7 p.m. Eastern. That meeting is the next known step for the proposed moratorium.

A proposal, not a final halt

The committee action advances a proposed moratorium through 2027. It does not establish that the city has stopped all data-center construction or that every project under consideration will be treated the same way.

For now, the central unresolved question is whether the full council will approve a pause on new approvals through 2027 when it meets Aug. 10.
