Daulton Varsho’s first scheduled Astros game comes against Toronto after trade

Houston’s newest outfielder is scheduled to face his former team immediately. The Astros acquired center fielder Daulton Varsho from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, Aug. 3, 2026, and the teams are scheduled to meet Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Daikin Park in Houston.

Houston activated Varsho after the trade and sent right-hander Spencer Arrighetti and cash to Toronto. The Astros also optioned outfielder Lucas Spence to Triple-A Sugar Land.

What Houston acquired

Varsho, 30, is listed by Major League Baseball as a center fielder. The Astros’ official transaction record says Toronto traded Varsho and cash to Houston for Arrighetti on Aug. 3.

The Associated Press reported that Varsho had a .682 OPS over 99 games for Toronto in 2026 and had won a Gold Glove award in 2024. His official MLB player record lists a .243 batting average, seven home runs, 26 RBIs and a .682 OPS for the 2026 regular season.

Roster changes in Houston

The trade produced an immediate major-league roster change. Houston activated Varsho, while Spence was optioned to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, the Astros’ Triple-A affiliate. Arrighetti moved to Toronto as part of the completed deal.

The moves affect both Houston’s major-league outfield group and its Triple-A roster. Varsho’s specific role against Toronto depends on the official lineup and manager’s decisions.
