Houston Gas and Diesel Prices: Regular Gas Dips, Diesel Rises

The split matters differently for residents and businesses: gasoline costs were slightly lower than the previous day but remained well above recent comparison points, while diesel was higher than the previous day, last week, last month and last year.

Regular gas dipped for the day but stayed higher over time

AAA reported that Houston’s regular-gasoline average fell 0.4 cents from the previous day. The daily decline did not erase the broader increase. The average was 5.1 cents higher than a week earlier, 23.3 cents higher than a month earlier and 88.1 cents higher than a year earlier.

For commuters and households, that means a modestly lower average than Tuesday but a substantially higher cost than during each of those longer comparison periods. The effect is more noticeable for drivers with long commutes, larger fuel tanks or multiple gasoline-powered vehicles.

Diesel rose across every AAA comparison

Houston’s diesel average increased 0.7 cents from the previous day to $4.846 per gallon. It was also 12.6 cents higher than a week earlier, 45.1 cents higher than a month earlier and $1.631 higher than a year earlier.

That makes diesel the sharper cost concern for commercial and work vehicles. Truckers, contractors, delivery operators, freight and distribution companies, restaurants receiving food shipments and service businesses using diesel equipment may face additional operating pressure if the increase continues. Those are practical costs to watch, not proof that any particular Houston business has raised prices.

EIA’s Houston benchmark was slightly lower

The U.S. Energy Information Administration listed Houston regular gasoline at $3.600 per gallon for the week of July 27. The EIA series was released July 28 and covers a weekly measurement period, while AAA’s $3.613 figure is a daily Houston metro check dated July 29.

The figures are close, but they are not identical snapshots. The EIA number is a weekly benchmark; AAA’s metro table provides the more current daily comparison along with week-, month- and year-ago averages.

What Houston drivers and businesses should watch

Metro averages do not represent every station in Houston. Pump prices can vary by neighborhood, brand, competition, fuel grade and the timing of a station’s latest price change. Comparing nearby stations before filling up may still produce meaningful savings, especially for drivers buying larger quantities.

The latest signal is mixed for Houston households: regular gas eased slightly from the prior day but remained much more expensive than a year ago. For diesel users, the average moved higher in every comparison supplied by AAA, a trend that could add pressure to transportation, construction, maintenance, food distribution and other service costs.
