Akron water plant valve project reaches bidding deadline

Contractor bids are due today, Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 3 p.m. for a valve and actuator replacement project at the Akron Water Supply Plant’s High Lift Pump Station.

The city’s solicitation covers equipment serving all six high-service pumps, along with related piping and valve work. The immediate development is the bid deadline. The available records do not show a contract award or establish that construction is scheduled to begin.

Work involves six high-service pumps

The project calls for automatic ball valves and actuators for all six high-service pumps. The scope also includes adjacent Limitorque manual butterfly valves, 30-inch 90-degree bends and additional actuators for three 48-inch butterfly valves.

The work is located at the Akron Water Supply Plant’s High Lift Pump Station and concerns equipment in the city’s water-supply system. Akron’s capital-planning records list the high-service pump ball valve and Limitorque manual valve replacement as part of planned Water Plant infrastructure work.

City authorized public bidding in June

Akron posted the solicitation June 23. City Council had authorized the city to advertise bids through Ordinance No. 165-2026, approved June 15. The ordinance authorized the Public Service director or designee to enter into a contract or contracts after publicly advertising for bids. The recorded vote was 12-0, with Council Member Phil Lombardo abstaining.

The council action authorized the procurement process. It was not a contract award and did not establish a final project price, contractor or construction schedule.

What residents do not know yet

The available records do not identify an awarded contractor, final project cost, construction start date or completion date.

They also do not announce a planned water outage or other customer disruption connected to the project. The records support describing the work as water-plant maintenance and infrastructure improvement, but they do not establish that it will prevent a specific future failure or produce a particular customer-service result.

Today’s firm milestone is the 3 p.m. bid deadline. Any later award, construction schedule or work-related service notice would be a separate development. For now, Akron is seeking bids for equipment replacement and improvements at a major water-plant pumping facility.
