Napa City Council nomination deadline is August 7
Prospective Napa City Council candidates have until 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2026, to file nomination papers for the District 1 and District 3 seats on the November 3 municipal election ballot.
The nomination period opened at 8:00 a.m. July 13. The City Clerk issues and receives nomination papers for the offices, and the city asks candidates to schedule an appointment before taking out or filing paperwork at City Hall.
What is due by August 7
The election will fill one council seat in District 1 and one in District 3. Each is a four-year term.
Under the city’s filing instructions, a person becomes an official candidate after submitting and qualifying the required nomination papers. Candidates can arrange appointments with the City Clerk’s Office at 707-257-9503 or clerk@cityofnapa.org.
Nomination papers are available through City Hall’s South Wing at 955 School Street in Napa.
August 12 deadline is conditional
A later filing deadline of 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, may apply to eligible non-incumbent candidates if an incumbent for the affected office fails to submit nomination papers by the August 7 deadline.
The extension is not automatic. Napa’s formal notice says it does not apply when there is no incumbent eligible to be elected. The city’s election calendar identifies August 12 as an extended filing period only when the incumbent-filing condition applies.
District 1 and District 3 are on the November ballot
Napa’s City Council has five members: an at-large mayor and four district councilmembers. The city identifies the District 1 and District 3 terms as expiring in December 2026.
The general municipal election is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The city’s notice says the election will be conducted by mail, with ballot drop boxes and vote centers open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

People considering a City Council run should contact the Napa City Clerk’s Office for the required documents, appointment availability and filing instructions. Napa County’s candidate-filing guidance confirms that candidates for city offices file with the applicable City or Town Clerk rather than the county Election Division.

The August 7 nomination deadline is separate from the November 3 election date, and any August 12 filing opportunity depends on the condition described in the city’s notice.
