Indiana VA facilities set to switch to federal electronic health record Aug. 22
Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers and clinics are scheduled to launch the Federal Electronic Health Record on Aug. 22, 2026, bringing changes to appointment communications, after-visit documents, care-team information and some online services for veterans who use the listed facilities.
The Department of Veterans Affairs announced the planned transition July 23. The facilities named in the notice include the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, the Fort Wayne VA Medical Center and multiple VA clinics across Indiana.
The change applies to those Indiana facilities. It does not mean every VA facility in the country will switch systems on Aug. 22. The Indiana implementation is taking place within the VAโs nationwide health system.
What may change for patients
VA says patients may receive different appointment letters after the transition. After-visit summaries may also look different, and the names used for care teams are expected to change as patient information is handled through the Federal Electronic Health Record.
Those documents and names can be important to veterans managing ongoing care, tracking instructions from a visit or trying to identify the team responsible for their treatment. The notice does not describe every document or communication that may change, so patients may see differences as facilities complete the implementation.
VA also warns that appointments may take longer while providers adapt to the new system. The department does not specify how much additional time appointments could require. It also does not provide a total number of veterans who will be affected by the Indiana launch.
The warning concerns the adjustment period described by VA, rather than a stated permanent change to appointment lengths. Local facility procedures may vary while staff and patients work through the transition.
Online access is planned to return Aug. 24
My HealtheVet on VA.gov and the VA Health and Benefits mobile app are planned to be available again on Aug. 24, two days after the scheduled Indiana record-system launch. VA says the tools will support prescription and care management when they return.
The timing means patients should account for a planned gap in access when they need to manage prescriptions or other care-related tasks online around the implementation date. The VA notice does not provide the exact duration of every service interruption or say that the tools will remain unavailable beyond the planned return date.
The department also says new care-team names are expected to be delivered Aug. 24. Patients may therefore encounter updated care-team information at about the same time the online services become available again.
Prescription mailing information
Patients who receive prescriptions by mail should verify that their mailing address is current with VA pharmacy services. VA includes that step in its guidance for the transition.
Keeping the address current is especially relevant for veterans who depend on mailed prescriptions and may be using online tools for prescription management during the implementation period. The notice does not state that mailed prescriptions will be delayed or that a specific pharmacy service will stop operating.
What happens next
The scheduled launch date for the listed Indiana VA facilities is Aug. 22, 2026. The planned return of My HealtheVet on VA.gov and the VA Health and Benefits mobile app, along with the expected delivery of new care-team names, is Aug. 24, 2026.
Until those dates, veterans using the affected medical centers and clinics should be prepared for updated appointment letters, different after-visit summaries, changed care-team names and potentially longer appointments as providers learn the Federal Electronic Health Record.
VA has not released a facility-by-facility schedule beyond the Indiana medical centers and clinics identified in its notice. It also has not quantified the number of affected veterans or specified the precise duration of each online-service interruption.
