Cochise County’s Planned Animal Shelter Property in Huachuca City Enters Escrow After $440,000 Offer
Cochise County has entered escrow to purchase 450 N. Huachuca Blvd. in Huachuca City for a future county animal shelter, after accepting an offer of $440,000. The county’s appraisal valued the property at approximately $482,000.
The purchase was still conditional on inspections, title review and other due diligence in the county’s July 14, 2026, public update. The county set closing for on or before Aug. 1, 2026. The update does not confirm whether the closing occurred by that date, so the property should not yet be described as county-owned or as an operating shelter.
Purchase process and due diligence
The Cochise County Board of Supervisors initially authorized the purchase process through Resolution 26-14 on June 2. The board’s vote was unanimous, according to county and local reporting.
On June 30, the county approved Resolution 26-21, which amended the purchase price and terms and provided a 30-day due-diligence period. The county said there were no known zoning impediments and no delinquent property taxes on the property, but those statements do not replace the inspections, title review and other checks required before closing.
The site is intended for a future county animal shelter. The county has not established an opening date, construction plan or operating budget in the cited information.
Why the Huachuca City site matters
The proposed purchase could help restore a centrally located county animal-shelter service after the prior central shelter closed following an electrical fire in 2018. KOLD reported that Willcox and Douglas were the closest rescue options after that closure.
The county also said more than 8,000 public signatures had been submitted since 2021 seeking action on animal-shelter services. If the transaction is completed and the future shelter moves forward, the Huachuca City location could improve access for residents and animal-control agencies across Cochise County. The available information does not establish how many animals the facility would serve or whether it would create jobs.
For now, the confirmed development is the escrow agreement and the planned purchase process—not a completed sale or an open shelter. A current county follow-up, board record or property record would be needed to confirm the closing after the Aug. 1 deadline.
