$8 million Blanding Boulevard–Wells Road project remains active in Orange Park with late-2026 completion target
An approximately $8 million Florida Department of Transportation intersection project remains under construction at Blanding Boulevard, also designated State Road 21, and Wells Road in Orange Park. Clay County’s latest listed road update gives the project a current contract completion date of November 16, 2026.
For people traveling through the intersection, the immediate effect is continuing construction activity, nighttime lane closures and periodic delays. The county advises motorists to use caution in the work zone as traffic patterns change.
What work is underway
The project includes milling and resurfacing, base work and shoulder treatment. Crews are also performing drainage improvements, curb and gutter work, and upgrades to traffic signals, roadway lighting and highway signs.
The construction also includes bridge work, sidewalks and a bicycle path. Those elements are intended to improve conditions around the intersection for people walking and biking, while the drainage and roadway work addresses broader infrastructure needs at the project location.
The project is an FDOT undertaking identified by Clay County as an Orange Park road project. The county’s July 14, 2026, update, included in its road and lane-closure reporting, lists November 16, 2026, as the current contract completion date. That is a contract schedule, not a guarantee that all work will be finished on that date if conditions change.
Night closures and local travel effects
Road work requiring nighttime closures is scheduled Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. The county says motorists should expect periodic travel delays and use caution while passing through the work zone.
Because the work is centered on Blanding Boulevard and Wells Road, the documented traffic effect is concentrated at that intersection rather than applying to every road in Orange Park. Commuters, school-trip drivers, residents and businesses using the area should allow additional travel time and watch for changing lane conditions during construction.
A separate U.S. 17 project
Clay County is also tracking a separate resurfacing project on U.S. 17/Park Avenue, from Doctors Inlet to Wells Road. That project began the week of May 25, 2026, carries an approximately $5.3 million cost and is scheduled for completion in early 2027.
The U.S. 17 work is separate from the Blanding Boulevard–Wells Road intersection project. The next known milestone for the intersection project is its current November 16, 2026, contract completion date, while nighttime work and periodic delays continue in the meantime.
