SDDOT lowers I-90 speed limit west of Rapid City for Sturgis Rally
South Dakota transportation officials have reduced the speed limit on a section of I-90 serving Rapid City and Sturgis as temporary traffic controls take effect for the 2026 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
The limit dropped from 75 mph to 65 mph on Aug. 6 and is scheduled to remain in place through Aug. 16. The reduction begins west of Exit 55 at Deadwood Avenue in Rapid City and continues east to west of Exit 30 in Sturgis.
That places the change on a key regional route used by motorists traveling between Rapid City, the Black Hills and Sturgis during the rally. Rapid City is a primary gateway and lodging base for rally traffic, so the controls can affect travel times, emergency response and road work along the corridor.
Signals and speed messaging are also planned
The South Dakota Department of Transportation said temporary traffic signals were scheduled to operate from July 31 through Aug. 17. Some of those signals are outside Rapid City proper, but they serve the regional traffic corridor connecting the city with Sturgis.
SDDOT also deployed message boards and speed trailers. The equipment is intended to provide traffic, crash and weather messaging as travel conditions change during the rally period.
The agency’s measures are temporary rather than a permanent change to the speed limit on I-90. The 65-mph period is tied specifically to the Aug. 7-16 rally schedule, with the reduction beginning one day before the event’s opening date.
U.S. 385 construction pause
Construction on U.S. Highway 385 between Pactola Dam and Calumet Road was paused Aug. 5. The work was scheduled to resume Aug. 18, after the temporary rally traffic-control period ends.
Pausing the project keeps that construction operation from overlapping with the heaviest part of the scheduled rally period. The announcement does not quantify how much travel time the pause may save or provide a forecast for congestion in Rapid City.
SDDOT’s announcement was issued by the Rapid City Region traffic engineer and specifically identifies the I-90 reduction west of the city’s Deadwood Avenue exit. KOTA Territory News also reported that the department planned temporary signals and lower speed limits around Rapid City and Sturgis. Its coverage included local public-safety context about August impaired-driving enforcement.
Traffic counts will measure the rally’s effect
SDDOT planned weekday traffic counts at nine locations entering Sturgis. The department also planned to issue a post-rally report, which is expected to provide a later record of traffic conditions rather than a prediction made before the event.
As of Aug. 8, the approved transportation announcement does not provide actual traffic counts or crash totals for Aug. 8. It also does not establish that all rally traffic or congestion is occurring in Rapid City, or that the temporary speed reduction applies to every roadway in the city.
For drivers using I-90 between Rapid City and Sturgis, the practical changes are the lower 65-mph limit through Aug. 16, temporary signals operating through Aug. 17 and the U.S. 385 construction pause followed by a scheduled Aug. 18 restart.
