Newport Beach schedules inaugural Art Week for Aug. 9-15
Newport Beach is scheduled to open its inaugural Art Week on Aug. 9, bringing performances, exhibitions and library programming together under a weeklong city arts calendar.
The program, titled “Then and Now,” is scheduled to run through Aug. 15, according to the City of Newport Beach’s August calendar and information from Visit Newport Beach. Programs are listed at the Newport Beach Civic Center, library branches and other Newport Beach venues.
The week gives residents a single local arts schedule to follow rather than a standalone event listing. The approved program materials identify public cultural programming across the city, but do not provide an attendance projection, city spending figure or estimate of economic impact.
Opening day brings dance and an orchestra concert
The opening-day schedule for Sunday, Aug. 9, includes Backhausdance’s “Garden Flow” performance. The same day also includes Pacific Symphony’s “Symphony in the Cities” concert, scheduled for 6 p.m.
Those events place dance and orchestral music at the center of the week’s launch. Visit Newport Beach identifies the Aug. 9 concert as part of the opening program, while the city calendar lists both Backhausdance and the Pacific Symphony performance.
The sources do not say that every event listed during the week is produced by the city. They identify the City of Newport Beach, the Newport Beach Arts Commission, Pacific Symphony, Backhausdance and Visit Newport Beach as entities connected to the announcement or its programming.
Programs continue through Aug. 15
The city calendar lists related library and arts programming throughout the week. That includes activities connected to Newport Beach library branches as well as programming at the Civic Center and other city venues.
The scheduled closing date is Saturday, Aug. 15. The calendar lists the 59th Annual Newport Beach Art Exhibition for that day, giving the week a closing event with an established annual title alongside the new Art Week designation.
The “59th Annual” label refers to the exhibition’s stated annual count. It does not mean Art Week itself has been running for 59 years. Visit Newport Beach separately describes the broader program as Newport Beach’s inaugural Art Week.
What residents can expect next
The next scheduled step is the Aug. 9 opening of “Then and Now.” Programs are listed to continue for seven days, ending with the Newport Beach Art Exhibition on Aug. 15.
For residents, the immediate local relevance is the coordination of performances, exhibitions and library programming at multiple Newport Beach locations. The schedule also connects a city arts commission, local venues and outside cultural organizations within one weeklong calendar.
The available materials establish the dates, featured programs and locations, but not ticketing details, attendance limits, city costs or an economic forecast. Those details cannot be determined from the approved sources.
Visit Newport Beach’s description of the event as inaugural is retained here as an attributed designation. The City of Newport Beach calendar provides the scheduled dates and event listings, including the 6 p.m. Pacific Symphony concert on Aug. 9 and the 59th Annual Newport Beach Art Exhibition on Aug. 15.
