Racine Water Utility Reports Seasonal Taste and Odor Changes

The Racine Water Utility reported July 21, 2026, that customers may notice seasonal changes in the taste and odor of their drinking water. The city said the water remains safe for drinking, cooking and bathing and continues to meet state and federal drinking-water standards.

The utility is monitoring lake conditions and testing water throughout the summer as it tracks the seasonal changes. It also is increasing hydrant flushing in areas where customers have reported concerns. The flushing is one of the steps the utility is taking while the issue continues to be monitored.

The city budgeted funds for additional treatment after a similar event the previous year. That enhanced treatment has not yet been approved by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, so the utility is continuing its current monitoring and response measures while it awaits the state decision.

The city’s notice does not say when DNR approval is expected, how many customers are affected or which specific compounds are involved. It also does not establish that all Racine neighborhoods are experiencing the same conditions. The next known step is continued lake monitoring, water testing and hydrant flushing while the utility waits for approval.
