Los Alamos schools start Aug. 10 with free meals and early Fridays

Los Alamos Public Schools will begin the 2026-27 school year Monday, Aug. 10, for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Preschool students will start Wednesday, Aug. 12.

The district is also beginning the school year with two schedule and access changes for families: free breakfast and lunch for every student, and a one-hour early release every Friday during the school year.

School dates and Friday dismissals

The Aug. 10 opening applies to the district’s K-12 students. Families with preschoolers will need to plan for a separate start date two days later, on Aug. 12.

Students across Los Alamos Public Schools will be dismissed one hour earlier than usual on Fridays. That recurring schedule change will affect weekly child-care, activity and transportation arrangements throughout the 2026-27 school year.

The district’s back-to-school page does not list individual bell schedules or bus routes. Families should check with their school for details about regular start and dismissal times, as well as transportation arrangements.

Registration and meals

Online registration is required for students attending district sites. Los Alamos Public Schools encourages families to complete registration before the first day of classes so enrollment information and student records are ready when school begins.

Free breakfast and lunch will be available to all students. The district’s announcement identifies the meal benefit but does not set out serving times, so families may need to confirm meal schedules with their individual schools.

Together, the staggered opening dates, weekly early Fridays and universal meal access give families several details to put on their calendars before classes start. The preschool start date is especially important for households with children in different grade levels, while the Friday release will require recurring arrangements after the first week.

The Los Alamos Public Schools board lists its next meeting for Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. The meeting is scheduled during the first week of classes and is the next listed district governance date after the school year begins.
