Port of Seattle extends airport-plan environmental review comment deadline to Aug. 20

Des Moines residents have more time to weigh in on the Port of Seattle’s airport planning process after the public comment period for a draft environmental impact statement was extended to 5 p.m. Aug. 20, 2026.

The review covers near-term projects in the Port’s Sustainable Airport Master Plan for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The City of Des Moines identifies the plan as a matter that could affect surrounding communities, including Des Moines.

The extended deadline is the immediate change for residents, businesses and other community members following the process. Comments on the draft environmental impact statement will remain open through the new deadline.

What the review covers

The draft environmental impact statement examines potential effects associated with the airport plan and its near-term projects. Issues relevant to surrounding communities include aircraft operations, noise, traffic and other environmental conditions.

Because the document is a draft, the comment period is part of the review process rather than a final approval of airport expansion or a final environmental decision. The final projects to be approved and their ultimate effects on noise or traffic have not been established.

Des Moines Library is listed as a location where the draft environmental impact statement can be reviewed. The City of Des Moines, Burien and SeaTac also hosted a public meeting and open house about the process on July 14, 2026.

The three-city meeting was part of the public outreach surrounding the draft review. It gave communities near the airport a scheduled forum during the comment period, while the extended deadline gives residents additional time after that July event to examine the document and prepare comments.

The next known date in the process is 5 p.m. Aug. 20, when the extended public comment period closes. Until then, the Port’s Sustainable Airport Master Plan near-term projects remain under draft environmental review, with potential effects on surrounding communities still being considered.
