Extreme Heat and Wildfire Danger Trigger Emergency Response Across the West
A late-July and early-August heat wave brought record or near-record temperatures and worsening wildfire conditions across parts of the Western United States, prompting an emergency declaration in Washington and an unusually severe fire-weather warning for eastern portions of the state.
Las Vegas reached 116 degrees Fahrenheit during the heat wave, according to the Associated Press. The combination of dangerous heat, strong winds and heightened wildfire risk created threats for people, property, utilities, travel and emergency-response operations across the region.
Washington declares a state of emergency
Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency on Aug. 1, 2026, as high temperatures and strong winds worsened wildfires in the state.
The declaration came as fire conditions intensified in Washington and as the broader weather pattern increased wildfire danger in multiple Western states. The emergency action made Washington the clearest example of the public response described during the developing heat wave, but conditions were not identical across the West.
