20.8 million Medicare enrollees set to get a one-time $90 payment
About 20.8 million U.S. residents enrolled in Original Medicare Part B are scheduled to receive a one-time $90 payment in October, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The payment is intended to offset Part B premiums and is funded through the Medicare Improvement Fund.
The payment is automatic, according to the Associated Press, and Medicare Advantage enrollees are not eligible. AP also reports that people receiving Medicaid premium assistance are excluded. The eligible group is fewer than one-third of the 64.2 million Medicare beneficiaries AP counts overall; the news agency estimates the payments will cost about $2 billion.
CMS expects most payments by direct deposit on or around October 8, with Treasury checks mailed later in October. These are expected dates, not confirmation that payments have arrived.
Beneficiaries can call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227 to check eligibility. CMS says they can contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 about payment status beginning October 15.
