SR 167/I-5 interchange project advances as Fife road construction continues

Transportation work tied to the future SR 167/I-5 interchange and Port of Tacoma Road is continuing in Fife, with construction updates affecting the city’s road network and a public-information period for the interchange running through Aug. 15, 2026.

The City of Fife posted construction and closure updates for the Port of Tacoma Road Phase 2A project on July 8. The work is separate from the SR 167 completion project, but both projects are part of a broader set of transportation changes affecting commuters, freight operators, pedestrians, cyclists and businesses in Fife.

A planned freight connection

The SR 167 completion project is intended to provide a more direct route between Interstate 5 and the Port of Tacoma. Project information says the connection is also intended to reduce the number of freight trucks using local city streets.

That goal is especially relevant to Fife’s transportation network, where local roads serve a mix of port-related freight, daily commuters, commercial traffic and people walking or riding bicycles. The future interchange is taking shape in Fife, according to project information from the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The project has not opened or reached completion. A virtual open house and public-information period for the I-5/SR 167 interchange was scheduled from June 15 through Aug. 15, 2026, giving the public an opportunity to review project information during that period.

Current road work and safety projects

Initial construction activity described in city materials included erosion-control work that had no immediate impact on road operations. The city’s 2026 work plan also identifies construction activity affecting Fife’s transportation network.

Separate safety work is planned for 20th Street East, which the city identifies as a high-risk corridor for vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist crashes. That work places the interchange and Port of Tacoma Road projects within a larger transportation program focused not only on freight movement, but also on safety for people using local streets.

The city and WSDOT project materials do not announce a completion date or provide a complete current closure schedule for every phase of the work. Travelers and freight operators should rely on the latest city and WSDOT notices for near-term changes to routes and road operations.

For Fife, the long-term objective is a more direct port connection and fewer trucks on local streets. In the near term, construction activity and project-related closures will continue to require attention from people traveling through the city and businesses operating along its transportation routes.
