Edna pursues state funding for District 2 drainage and water-line improvements

The Edna City Council approved hiring Traylor and Associates to administer an application for Texas General Land Office grant funding for additional drainage and water-line projects in City Council District 2.

The action, reported by the city on Feb. 5, 2026, advances a proposed infrastructure project but does not mean grant money has been awarded. The city account also does not establish a construction schedule, project cost, engineering scope or number of affected properties.

District 2 infrastructure proposal

The proposed work would address drainage and water-line needs in District 2. If the application is funded, the improvements could benefit residents who rely on the area’s drainage and water service. Construction has not been reported as underway, and the grant application does not guarantee that flooding will be eliminated or water pressure improved.

Traylor and Associates will handle grant administration for the application. The proposed state funding source is a Texas General Land Office grant program.

Uncontested seats and May election

The council also approved a certification of unopposed candidates and gave a first reading to Ordinance 2026-03, which would cancel Edna’s May 2, 2026, municipal election.

The city identified three unopposed candidates: Chris Jackson for District 3, Mike Dodds for District 4 and Amanda Friedrich for District 5. With no challengers for those seats, voters did not have a contested May 2 race for the identified positions. The reported action was a certification and first reading; the final legal status of Ordinance 2026-03 was not established in the city account.

The council’s action covered Districts 3, 4 and 5, while the proposed infrastructure work is in District 2. Together, the items affect both city services and the local election calendar in Edna, the Jackson County seat.

Planning and development work

Edna’s Planning and Zoning Commission was scheduled to discuss an update to the city’s comprehensive planning before the matter returned to the City Council. The city has also reported council action to update the Comprehensive Plan and Code of Ordinances on building, land use and development.

That update was adopted through Ordinance 2026-04 and was based on recommendations from a consultant and the Planning and Zoning Commission. The actions place the District 2 infrastructure proposal alongside continuing city work on land-use and development policy.
