Montgomery Reports Fewer Homicides, More Arrests in First Half of 2026

Montgomery officials reported fewer homicides and more arrests during the first six months of 2026, offering a midyear snapshot of public safety in the city.

The city reported 26 homicides during the period, compared with 32 in the comparable prior period. That is a decrease of six homicides. Montgomery police also made more than 3,700 arrests, an increase of 44.5% from the same comparison period.

The figures were included in a city update issued July 10. Montgomery characterized public safety as a continuing priority and presented the numbers as part of its account of progress during 2026.

What the numbers show

The homicide total and arrest count measure different aspects of public safety. The homicide figure records deaths classified by the city in the reporting period, while the arrest number reflects police activity during that period.

The reported change does not, by itself, explain why homicides declined or why arrests increased. It also is not a measurement of every category of crime in Montgomery. The city’s update did not identify the exact dates used for the comparable prior period.

For residents, the figures provide a current city-specific benchmark: fewer reported homicides alongside a substantial increase in arrests by the Montgomery Police Department. The comparison may help frame later updates as the year continues, but it is not a final tally for all of 2026.
