Montgomery neighborhoods prepare for National Night Out on August 4

Montgomery’s 2026 National Night Out program is set for Tuesday, August 4, with city support structured around neighborhood-run activities rather than one confirmed citywide gathering.

The City of Montgomery’s mini-grant package allows an eligible neighborhood organization to receive up to $500. The organization must provide a match equal to 20% of the grant award.

Neighborhood events, not one central gathering

The city’s grant materials identify Tuesday, August 4, 2026, as the official National Night Out date. Grant-supported events must be hosted before Friday, August 21, 2026.

The documents do not establish a single citywide event or confirm locations for every participating neighborhood. Residents should check with their neighborhood association or local organizers to learn whether an activity is planned, where it will occur and whether it will be held on August 4 or another date before the city’s deadline.

What the mini-grant can cover

Eligible expenses include food, snacks, soft drinks, bottled water, ice, grilling supplies, picnic supplies and decorations. The program also lists rental items such as tables, chairs, tents and bounce houses, along with entertainment such as a DJ or band. The city says the list is not all-inclusive and advises organizations to ask before spending when an expense is unclear.

Applicants must be organized neighborhood entities with officers, an active EIN or TIN, a bank account in the association’s name, a completed W-9 and an E-Verify statement. The application package also requires evidence that a majority of the neighborhood association favored the request.

City rules exclude political activities, personal or private benefits, business ventures for individual gain and certain equipment. Neighborhood organizations also may not re-grant the money to other charitable organizations, although they may support partners with items rather than money or gift cards.

Reports are due August 21

Organizations that receive National Night Out funding must submit a final written account by 4 p.m. Friday, August 21. The report must include paid receipts totaling the award amount and photographs. It also must describe the event and its costs, including the date, location, approximate attendance and other required event details.

The city says a project or event not held before August 21 can result in forfeiture of the grant. It also warns that failing to submit a timely final report can affect eligibility for future Neighborhood Services grants.

Community-policing purpose

The Montgomery Police Department describes community policing as a strategy in which police build ties and work closely with community members. The department’s Community Policing and Crime Prevention Bureau lists Neighborhood Watch, safety talks, neighborhood activities and other outreach services.

That approach matches National Night Out’s stated goal of strengthening police-community partnerships and neighborhood relationships. The national campaign says communities commonly organize block parties, cookouts, safety demonstrations, youth events and visits from emergency personnel, but Montgomery’s approved 2026 locations and activities were not identified in the city documents reviewed for this article.
