Rialto Street Vehicle Closure Scheduled Monday for Lowrie Street Bridge Repairs

Rialto Street will close to vehicles between Ley Street and Route 28 beginning Monday, September 14, while Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure repairs the Lowrie Street Bridge abutments in Troy Hill.

The City expects the closure to last one to two months. Vehicle traffic will be detoured via Route 28, Chestnut Street and Troy Hill Road.

What will close

The closure applies to the section of Rialto Street beneath the bridge, between Ley Street and Route 28. The restriction is scheduled to begin September 14, 2026.

The City has not provided a firm completion date. Its notice gives an expected construction period of one to two months, so the schedule could change as the work proceeds.

What will remain open

The Lowrie Street Bridge is expected to remain open during construction. Pedestrian access also will be maintained throughout the repairs.

The planned restriction is therefore for vehicles using the affected section of Rialto Street, not a closure of the bridge itself.

Why the repairs are needed

The work will address aged and deteriorated stone in the bridge’s abutments. The City says the bridge superstructure, including its concrete beams and deck, was replaced in 2020-2021, but the bridge has retained a poor rating because of the abutments’ condition.

Crews are scheduled to replace deteriorated stone with local quarry sandstone, clean the abutments and repoint them.

What drivers should do

Beginning Monday, drivers should avoid the closed section of Rialto Street and use the announced detour through Route 28, Chestnut Street and Troy Hill Road.

The closure is expected to remain in place for one to two months. The bridge is expected to stay open, and pedestrian access is planned to continue while the abutment repairs are completed.
