Pittsburgh Civic Leadership Academy returns; applications due Aug. 21

Pittsburgh is reopening its Civic Leadership Academy, a free, limited-capacity 10-week course on how city government operates. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2026.

The program gives eligible Pittsburgh residents and people who operate a business, nonprofit or community-impact work within city limits a structured opportunity to learn directly about the city’s departments, authorities and bureaus.

Wednesday evening schedule

The academy will meet Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. from September through December. The city says weekly sessions will include presentations, discussions and site visits with city government leaders.

The reopening announcement does not specify a class start date or location. Participation is limited, so submitting an application does not guarantee enrollment.

Who is eligible

Applicants must either live in the City of Pittsburgh or operate a business, nonprofit or community-impact work within city limits.

That makes the program relevant to residents as well as neighborhood leaders, nonprofit workers and local business operators who need a clearer understanding of which city offices and public authorities handle local issues.

What the course covers

The city says participants will learn from leaders connected to city departments, authorities and bureaus. The announced subject areas span city government functions including the mayor’s office, City Council, planning, finance, mobility and infrastructure, parks and recreation, permits and inspections, public safety, public works and community health and safety.

The curriculum also includes presentations and discussions involving public entities such as the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the Land Bank and Pittsburgh Water.

The academy is an educational and civic-engagement program. It is not a formal city position or a decision-making body.

Application deadline

Eligible applicants must apply by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026. The city’s announcement says the program is intended to promote understanding, transparency and partnership between city government and Pittsburgh neighborhoods.

Pittsburgh has used the Civic Leadership Academy as part of its broader civic-education efforts in the past. The city’s 2026 announcement, rather than earlier archive material, controls the current deadline, eligibility rules and schedule.
