Akron City Series moves nine football games to Saturday mornings
Nine Akron City Series football games in Weeks 8–10 are set to move to Saturday mornings, according to an Oct. 7 report by the Akron Beacon Journal. The report said Akron Public Schools released a revised schedule that places all nine games at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10, 17 and 24.
The reported change shifts games that had been scheduled for Friday nights and moves Saturday games from noon to 10 a.m. The Beacon Journal said the Friday-night games at 7 p.m. are being eliminated from the affected weeks. The revised slate lists three games each Saturday at Ellet, Buchtel and Kenmore venues.
Reported schedule for Weeks 8–10
| Date | Matchup | Venue | Kickoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oct. 10 | East vs. North | Ellet’s Joseph B. Yost Stadium | 10 a.m. |
| Oct. 10 | Ellet at Buchtel | Buchtel’s Tim Flossie Stadium | 10 a.m. |
| Oct. 10 | Firestone vs. Garfield | Kenmore Stadium | 10 a.m. |
| Oct. 17 | Firestone vs. East | Ellet’s Joseph B. Yost Stadium | 10 a.m. |
| Oct. 17 | North vs. Ellet | Kenmore Stadium | 10 a.m. |
| Oct. 17 | Garfield at Buchtel | Buchtel’s Tim Flossie Stadium | 10 a.m. |
| Oct. 24 | Garfield at Ellet | Ellet’s Joseph B. Yost Stadium | 10 a.m. |
| Oct. 24 | Buchtel vs. East | Kenmore Stadium | 10 a.m. |
| Oct. 24 | North vs. Firestone | Buchtel’s Tim Flossie Stadium | 10 a.m. |
The report identified East-North on Oct. 10, Firestone-East on Oct. 17 and Garfield-Ellet on Oct. 24 as games previously set for Fridays. For players, coaches, families and spectators, the reported revision changes both the day and kickoff time for those matchups, while also setting earlier starts for the other games in the three-week stretch.
October 2 game ended at halftime
The Beacon Journal connected the schedule change to the Oct. 2 Buchtel-Firestone game at Ellet, which it reported was stopped at halftime after spectator fights. Buchtel was leading 20–0 when play ended. The newspaper attributed to APS athletics coordinator Tom McKinnon that the game would not be completed later. It also reported that coaches from Buchtel and Firestone understood the decision to stop the game.
Akron Public Schools’ athletics page still links to a 2026 City Series schedule PDF marked revised July 27. That document lists Friday games at 7 p.m. and Saturday kickoffs at noon, rather than the Oct. 7 changes described by the Beacon Journal. The reported revised matchups, venues and times therefore differ from the schedule in the district-linked PDF.
The next reported games are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10. Families and spectators planning to attend should note the difference between the newspaper’s reported revision and the older schedule PDF still linked on the district athletics page.
