Jury seated in Sheng Thao’s Oakland federal trial
A 12-person jury and six alternates were sworn in Oct. 13 in Oakland for the federal trial of former Mayor Sheng Thao and three co-defendants. CBS San Francisco and Oakland North reported that the panel was selected from about 70 prospective jurors; CBS said it includes seven women and five men.
Opening statements followed Oct. 14. Testimony began Oct. 15, when former chief of staff Leigh Hanson took the stand as the first witness, KQED reported.
Thao, Andre Jones, David Duong and Andy Duong have pleaded not guilty to corruption-related charges. Prosecutors allege a bribery and corruption scheme, while defense attorneys disputed the prosecution’s account in opening statements. The trial remained pending as of Oct. 17; testimony had begun Oct. 15, and no verdict had been reached.
