Arlington County sues to pause proposed 250-foot arch
The Arlington County Board filed a federal lawsuit on Oct. 8, 2026, seeking to pause construction-related progress on the proposed 250-foot Triumphal Arch at Memorial Circle until required environmental review is completed.
The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, challenges the federal review process for President Donald Trumpโs proposed arch. The county is asking the court to set aside the National Park Serviceโs finding that the project would have no significant environmental impact and to require further review.
The countyโs claims and the White House response
The county alleges that the National Park Serviceโs review did not adequately meet the requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act and that the federal process moved too quickly. It also says potential effects on Arlington residents, local traffic and historic properties were not adequately assessed. Those are claims in the lawsuit, not findings by a court.
The White House disputed the countyโs claims, telling the Associated Press that the administration had complied with legal requirements. It called the suit meritless and said it believed the case would be dismissed.
The filing puts the countyโs challenge before a federal court, but it does not itself stop the project. The countyโs request for a pause would require court action. Bloomberg Law identified the case as County Board of Arlington County, Virginia v. National Park Service, No. 26-cv-03372.
