McKinney council approves Islamic association campus expansion
The McKinney City Council unanimously approved the proposed expansion of the McKinney Islamic Association’s Virginia Parkway campus on Aug. 5, clearing a city land-use hurdle for a larger community facility.
The vote was reported as 7-0 after a contentious public meeting. The proposed campus would include three buildings: a main sanctuary, classrooms and a gym.
Traffic and property concerns shaped debate
Opponents raised concerns about traffic, parking, safety and possible effects on nearby property values during the public discussion. Those issues put the decision in the broader context of how a larger community facility could affect the surrounding area.
The council’s action approved the proposed expansion as a zoning and development matter. It was not a ruling on the religious validity of the institution. The project involves an Islamic association that has served McKinney families for nearly 30 years.
What the vote changes
For the association, the decision clears a major city-level step toward developing the Virginia Parkway campus. For nearby residents, it marks the point at which the proposal can move into the next applicable development and permitting stages.
The vote does not establish that construction has started or that all permits have been issued. It also does not set a confirmed construction schedule or building capacity. Those details will depend on subsequent project approvals and permitting.
The decision therefore gives the proposed campus a path forward without establishing when construction will begin or when the facilities could open. Further action will be needed before the project reaches that stage.
