Benson and James both back data-center pause in Michigan debate
Michigan gubernatorial nominees Jocelyn Benson and John James both proposed a moratorium on new data-center development during their second debate, while differing over safeguards and local authority.
Benson said the pause should be used to develop safeguards for water use, energy use and noise before communities decide whether to allow projects. James emphasized local control, including communitiesโ ability to reject data centers. Both approaches included a local role, with Benson stressing statewide safeguards and James emphasizing local authority.
Both candidates supported suspending the federal gas tax. Benson said she was open to suspending Michiganโs state gas tax; James supported suspension and said he would sign it. These remain campaign positions: the debate did not change Michiganโs taxes or data-center rules.
The debate took place at WDIV-TVโs Detroit studio on Oct. 15, 2026. It followed their first debate on Oct. 6. Michiganโs general election is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026.
