Nurses can apply for financial support to work at eligible nursing homes through a new program that has at least $275 million committed. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services began accepting applications for Nurses for Nursing Homes on October 26, 2026; the program offers eligible participants up to $40,000 in student-loan repayment and, for those who meet separate conditions, a $10,000 stipend.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced the initiative on October 23. CMS projects it will support more than 4,000 nurses, but that is a forecastโnot a count of people already approved or funded. The projection also does not establish whether nursing-home staffing levels will change.
State commitments exceed the federal contribution
CMS committed $100 million, while states committed at least $175 million. That means the state contribution is at least $75 million higher than CMSโs and at least 1.75 times as large. The funding comes from civil monetary penalties collected from nursing homes by CMS and states.
The maximum possible combined benefit is $50,000, but it is not guaranteed to every applicant. Nurses who meet the requirements for both benefits may receive up to $40,000 in loan repayment and the separate $10,000 stipend. Some eligible nurses without qualifying student debt may qualify for the stipend if they graduated within the previous two years.
Applications are accepted during 2026 and 2027. Funding is allocated first-come, first-served within each state and depends on that stateโs available funds, so the national commitment does not mean every applicant will receive an award.
Who can qualifyโand when
Participants must hold an active registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical or vocational nurse (LPN/LVN) license when employment begins, average at least 30 work hours a week and complete a three-year commitment at a qualifying site. The commitment starts when the participant begins work there. Payments are made quarterly while participants meet program requirements.
All rural nursing facilities are eligible, along with additional facilities in areas CMS identifies as having higher nursing labor shortages. Not every nursing home qualifies. A limited number of nursing-home inspector positions with state agencies are also eligible. All 50 states and the District of Columbia are participating.
Nursing students may start an application, but they must graduate, obtain an active license and secure qualifying employment before they can qualify for payment. CMS says most complete applications are reviewed within 30 business days; selected participants receive an agreement before enrollment.
Applicants generally must not have worked at a nursing home or state agency during the 60 days before opening an application account. During the initial exception period, October 26, 2026, through January 24, 2027, RNs and LPNs/LVNs who began work at an eligible nursing home between July 28 and October 25, 2026, may qualify despite that recent employment. Their payments are prorated for time already worked.
LeadingAge welcomed the initiative and said it had advocated federal collaboration and sustained investment in the nursing-home workforce. The programโs projected reach remains an estimate; its effect on staffing has not been established.

*THE MINISTRY OF WISDOM – WISDOM FOR LEADERSHIP (AS A DIRECTOR / HEAD OF DEPARTMENT)*
*Topic: WISDOM TO LEAD THE PEOPLE UNDER YOU*
_Proverbs 29:4 says, The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it._
_Ephesians 6:9 says, Ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven._
Hear me, if God has made you a Head of Department, a Director, a boss in that office, it is not because you are the most intelligent. It is because God trusted you to preserve people, not just to pursue results. Many Directors have position but no wisdom. They have title but no people. And when the people under you cry, heaven is hearing.
God did not give you staff to use them, He gave you souls to lead them. The day you forget that, your leadership will collapse.
Here is the wisdom to manage the people working under you:
*1. SEE THEM AS PEOPLE, NOT AS TOOLS.*
A foolish boss sees workers as machines. A wise director sees them as destinies. That cleaner, that driver, that junior officer has a family, has a dream, has a pain you don’t know. If you only see their function, you will lose their loyalty. _Philippians 2:4 says, Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others._ Learn their names. Remember their story. People don’t follow position, they follow care.
*2. WISDOM GIVES RESPECT BEFORE IT DEMANDS RESPECT.*
Many directors want respect by shouting, by threatening. Listen, fear can make people obey you in the office, but only respect makes them stand with you outside the office. Greet them. Say thank you.” Say please. Don’t insult them before visitors. Correct in private, praise in public. _1 Peter 2:17 says, Honour all men._ If you honour the small, the small will honour your vision.
*3. WISDOM LISTENS BEFORE IT CONCLUDES.*
A foolish HOD concludes before hearing. He hears gossip about a staff and transfers him. He hears a complaint and suspends. No! _Proverbs 18:13 says, He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him._ Call that officer. Sit down. Ask, “What happened?” Sometimes that late-comer is nursing a sick child. Sometimes that angry staff is not lazy, he is frustrated. A listening leader solves 50% of the problem without shouting.
*4. WISDOM DOES NOT DO FAVOURITISM.*
This is where many offices die. You love one tribe, one church, one person who praises you, and you promote him even when he is lazy. Others are watching. _James 2:9 says, But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin._ Be fair with duties, fair with leave, fair with promotion recommendation. When people see fairness, they give you their best. When they see favouritism, they give you politics.
*5. WISDOM CORRECTS WITH LOVE, NOT WITH HATRED.*
Don’t use your position to wound people. Your pen can recommend promotion or punishment use it with the fear of God. Correct to build, not to break. Tell them what they did wrong, how to do it right, and that you still believe in them. _Proverbs 27:5 says, Open rebuke is better than secret love._ Don’t keep malice. Don’t pile up mistakes to punish later. Correct today, in love.
*6. WISDOM PROTECTS YOUR PEOPLE.*
A good Director is a covering. When your juniors make a mistake, you don’t throw them under the bus before your own superiors. You take responsibility. _John 10:11 says, The good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep._ Stand for them when they are right. Defend them when they are absent. The day your staff knows you will protect them, they will protect your work even when you are not there.
*7. WISDOM BUILDS THEM, NOT JUST USES THEM.*
The greatest legacy of a Director is not the files he signed, but the men he raised. Teach them what you know. Send them for training. Recommend them. A foolish leader is afraid his junior will overtake him. A wise leader is proud when his junior overtakes him. _2 Timothy 2:2 says, And the things that thou hast heard of me… the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also._ If after your tenure nobody under you grew, you failed as a leader.
*FINAL WORD FOR YOU AS A DIRECTOR:*
Your office will end one day. Your title will end one day. But how you treated people will speak after you.
Some Directors, when they are transferred, the whole department fasts with joy. Others, when they are transferred, the whole department weeps. Which one will you be?
Lead with wisdom. Lead with care. Lead with respect. Because the same God who put you over them is watching how you treat them
*PRAYER FOR YOU
Father, in the name of Jesus, I ask for wisdom for every Director, every HOD listening to me. Give them a shepherd’s heart. Let them not use power to crush, but use power to build. Let their office be a place of peace, growth and honour. Give them grace to lead and not to wound, in Jesus mighty name Amen.
